Some times getting a traffic ticket isn't a big deal. You sign the back, pay a fine and be done with it. But, Canadian drivers need to be aware of the potential impact on their licenses and insurance that a speeding or other moving violation in New York State can have. Both Ontario and the Quebec have a "reciprocity compact" with New York State regarding traffic violations. This means that Ontario or Quebec drivers will find that traffic violations they are convicted of in NYS will be treated as if those convictions had occurred in their home provinces. In some cases this may not have much consequence, in others the consequences in Canada can be more severe than they would be if a driver had a NYS license. The bottom line is that Ontario and Quebec drivers should not ignore or treat lightly a speeding or other traffic summons received in New York just because it occurred in another country. If you would like to have a consultation with a NYS traffic attorney to discuss a ticket you received in New York contact us or fill out our traffic violation input form and we will contact you with an evaluation of your situation.

If you have our firm handle your traffic ticket you can be assured that when you call our office you will speak with a traffic law attorney who is licensed to practice law in New York State. Your ticket will be handled by the people you speak with. Many of the services offering to "take care" of your NYS ticket aren't law firms at all. They simply brokers that take your money and farm out the legal work to any lawyer who will work for the lowest fee. If you want to have a NYS attorney handle your case and you want to speak directly with that attorney, contact the Law Offices of Glenn W. Magnell.

Impact of speeding convictions on Ontario drivers

Many of our clients ask about the impact of a NYS speeding conviction on their Ontario licenses.  In fact, the impact can be very severe because Ontario will treat a NYS traffic violation as though it happened in Ontario.  This means that any NYS speeding conviction for more than 10 mph (16 kpm) over the limit will result in  "3 demerit points" back home.  A 20 mph over conviction will mean "4 demerit points," etc.

Hidden Costs of NYS Traffic Convictions

One of the hidden costs of a NYS traffic conviction is a special "driver responsibility fee" imposed by NYS Dept. of Motor Vehicles.  The fee is imposed on any driver (NYS or other) who accumulates 6 or more points in an 18 month period.  This means that a single "6 point" ticket can result in a $300 fee from DMV on top of any fine the court imposes.  The fee increases by $75 for each "point" above 6.
